Running Start

What is Running Start?

Running Start is a program that allows 11th and 12th grade students to take college courses at Washington's 34 community and technical colleges. Students earn both high school and college credits for these courses.

Running Start students and their families do not pay tuition. They are responsible for mandatory fees, books and transportation. Students receive both high school and college credit for these classes, which accelerates their progress through the education system. Fee waivers may be obtained at many colleges.

Running Start Benefits and Potential Risks
Students considering participation in Running Start should be aware of certain benefits and potential risks before enrolling in the program. The decision to start college early is not for everyone. It is important for students/parents to assess whether a student is academically and socially/emotionally ready to be a college student.

Please read the one page article below highlighting important points to consider.

When Should I begin the Running Start Process?

In January - April colleges often will provide informational events. Check back on this page, on the JJSHS newsfeeds, and social media sites for upcoming events and dates. After attending an informational event students may begin the enrollment process.

Steps to Running Start Enrollment

 1. Review the SCC Running Start informational page that can be reached with this link:

2. Make an appointment to meet with your high school counselor. Initial meeting requires both student and parent/guardian to attend.

3. The Community Colleges of Spokane admissions office requires new students to do the following:

  • Apply on the CCS website.
  • Send the Running Start Office a high school transcript.
  • Complete New Student Orientation.
  • Parent and student sign the Awareness Disclaimer and student uploads to Canvas.
  • Student meets with High School Counselor who fills out High School Graduation Planning Sheet and student uploads to Canvas.
  • Pass quiz.

Follow the steps in order, because finishing each step triggers the next. Students that do the steps out of order or who do not upload documents in Canvas, may miss out on crucial processes and delay their admission to the Running Start program

4. Make an appointment to meet with a counselor at the community college. This is an important step to map out your Running Start plan with your college counselor.

Important Items to Note

It is imperative to stay connected with the high school. It is your responsibility to read your school emails daily (this is how your high school counselor will communicate important information to you), check the JJSHS website and social media sites often, and listen to all-call communications when they are sent.

Meet with (in-person, virtual, phone) your high school and college counselors often to ensure you are on track to graduate and to reach your running start goals.

Do not hesitate to reach out to the Counseling Office if you have questions or concerns during any part of this process. We look forward to working with you in this exciting endeavor.
