Peer to Peer Mentorship Program

The Peer to Peer Mentorship Program at Jenkins Jr/Sr High School aims to provide students with support and guidance on important life issues. Grants and contributions from generous sponsors enable our program.

Program Overview:
Jenkins students in grades 7–9 are paired with trained Mentors in grades 10–12 through the Peer to Peer Mentorship Program. During the summer, these Mentors receive leadership training that prepares them to facilitate safe and educational conversations on various subjects, including mental health, substance abuse prevention, being a successful student, and vital life skills, all under the supervision of the School Counselor.

Kickoff Event
Each school year begins with a "Kickoff Event" to foster strong Mentor-Mentee relationships. Last August, the teambuilding event was held on August 12th at Flight 509 in Spokane Valley. Additionally, the Peer to Peer Mentorship Program has taken trips to Mica Moon and Silverwood, all designed to build camaraderie among participants.

Lunch Meetings
Throughout the academic year, meetings are held once a month to allow mentors an opportunity to check in with their mentees. Under the guidance of the school counselor, mentors instruct the group in lessons. Among the subjects covered are coping strategies, mental health, healthy relationships, and goal-setting. Together, mentors and mentees engage in ice-breaker activities, lessons, group discussions, and lunch.

Regional Events
Washington State University hosts regional events on the Spokane Campus, which is the university’s health sciences campus and home to the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine. Mentors and Mentees have the opportunity to visit the campus, connect with peers from other schools, and participate in activities led by college students and professors.  At the regional event in December 2025, our Mentors presented a session on Healthy Relationships to the entire group.

End of the Year Celebration
Held in the Mistequa Hotel, this special evening was to recognize and celebrate the commitment, leadership, and dedication of the graduating Peer Mentors who served during the school year.
